Delighted myself thinking about the witch kids again, specifically their various attempts to build a replacement portal during the Summer. I'm picturing lots of brainstorm sessions that stretch late into the night and when they get tired enough, they devolve into arguing over who gets the last piece of pizza or playing truth or dare or whatever.
Hunter is feeling really proud of himself for having helped Belos rebuild a portal before. He has experience! He can make himself super useful! And then Amity 'Woman in STEM' Blight is also aiming for the same thing. She's an inventor's daughter. Her Dad's main area of expertise is using magic to power technology. She has plenty of opinions on the mechanical side of things.
Hunter and Amity either click extremely well and are plotting away at a prototype immediately or they disagree on every trivial detail and cannot go five minutes without arguing about it. There's no real resentment here. They're both just used to doing everything themselves and struggle to work as a team.
I don't think the project would get off the ground without Luz. She keeps everybody from wasting time with dud ideas because she's already spent tons of time in the Boiling Isles attempting to build a portal home. She knows exactly what WONT work cuz she's already tried it. She's also got a knack for thinking outside of the box and knows that even though glyphs are rendered useless in this realm, they can still be utilized. If she draws just the right glyph combo and finds a bit of magic for the glyphs to soak up, she's pretty sure they can light this portal's engine up.
Vee reminds them that she's still got a supply of Hexes Holdem cards, which have been working pretty well for keeping her human form. Luz, who had forgotten those things existed, nearly hits the roof in excitement.
Vee doesn't contribute much to the whole construction process, but while she does supervise. She did a health and safety course while at Summer Camp and is diligently making sure nobody is getting their asses blown up.
Portal Building is not Willow's strong suit. She does not have Luz and Hunter's experience, Amity's engineering knowledge or Gus' enthusiasm for tinkering with human technology. So she does what she does best and offers support. She hypes her smart friends up. And when they start doubting that they're actually making any progress, Willow swoops in to encourage them that if ANYBODY can build a portal, her best friends can!! Once the team realizes that they're gonna need something super strong to hold the portal upright, Willow beams. Her vines!! Her vines are tough as hell!! She can do that!!
Gus falls behind a little at first. He might be a prodigy but his skills are quite dependent on the existence of actual magic, so he struggles a bit to find his purpose here. He's very eager to work with human technology but Luz knows more about them than he does. He's smart enough to offer ideas but Hunter and Amity always come up with them before he does because they're both annoyingly STEM brained and have gotten a bit competitive about it. Gus is given the task of gathering equipment for the portal with Vee and he tries not to pout about it. After they managed to track down a half busted TV at a lawn sale, Vee takes him to a petstore to cheer him up. Gus gloomily stares at the hamsters running in their little wheels. He idly thinks about an article he read in one of his human magazines. About how hamsters in wheels can create energy. Unfortunately, hamsters aren't magic.
Cut to 2 days later when the team realizes that the Hexes Holdem cards just aren't gonna cut it. They don't possess nearly enough magic to power up a portal. It's not gonna work. All the time they've spent on this, and it's not even gonna work. They need something else. Anything else.
Luz looks like she's gonna burst into tears. Amity is pacing back and forth. Hunter is like this close 🤏 to slamming his head against the wall in an effort to rattle a genius idea out of his brain. Willow is making a valiant effort to keep everybody from having a full blown meltdown.
Gus is staring intently at Flapjack who is pecking away at the floorboards again. Then he's like "Hey....hear me out....what if-?"

Silly little comic idea I had a few months ago. Babies' are names are Stella (forehead star), Luna (round cheeks) and Sunny (angry baby). Sunny is a girl name for this, cuz I already have a Sol.

I've seen some people say Flapjack only chose Hunter once he defended Luz and let her leave with the palismen(thereby showing he's not a bad guy), but I don't agree with that when we actually see the moment Flapjack decides This boy is their new witch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunter's line here can be read in several ways, either a slip of the tongue he wouldn't have said otherwise, or it is something he has thought about but just never felt safe enough to openly express. I think a whole post can be made exploring Hunter's feelings about the titan having big plans for him, but the important part is that Hunter isn't happy about that. He's not content or reassured having some big destiny planned for him, kind of the opposite to Luz. And expressing those feelings, that desire to figure out and choose his own future outloud is what makes Flapjack choose him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The situation is an interesting echo of the Hexside kids getting their palismen by stating their wishes outloud. Only Hunter isn't saying this through any wish to bond with a palisman, Flapjack just happened to be there and Hunter's wish to choose his own future matched up with them.
I don't think palismen have a moral compass the way humans or witches do. Their interests begin and end with what their witch wants and what will help them, and not what is ethically right or wrong. The Bat Queen says palismen bond through emotion, with witches who share a likeminded desire. There's nothing about them needing to fit a 'good person' criteria(and personally I think that's more interesting).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Flapjack went back with Luz just to say goodbye to the Bat Queen, to tell her they've finally found someone. She has sheltered them for so long, hundreds of years that they've spent together. I wouldn't be surprised if Flapjack is the oldest of every palismen under the Bat Queen's protection. It's like paying respect to her, and sharing the news they've found someone at last, that they know will make her happy.

On a scale of goop to Homo Sapiens, how human are you?

Dude, you can't just ask a guy how human he is! Now you've ticked them both off!

@missallanea asked: RANDOM CHARACTER BUILDING QUESTIONS HOUR : A lot of people have playlists for their characters, but it can take a long time to listen to a whole playlist. If you could choose ONE SONG to have your followers listen to in order to better understand your portrayal, what would it be? ( for the character/s of your choice, or all of them if you so dare! )
Tumblr media
There's part of me that's like "I will do them all!" but we'd be here for days. So I'll do a few below the cut, in no particular order:
Hunter -- Monster by Imagine Dragons. There are a few reasons for this. Hunter certainly sees himself as a monster, especially after he learns he's a grimwalker, and he's trying to do better, trying to be better. He thinks that if his friends knew what he was, they wouldn't want to have anything to do with him, so he's determined to show them that he's good, that he can be more than what he is. (I could go into so much more, but....it's a start.)
Luz -- Courage In Me. Listen. Listen, I know it's one of Marinette's songs, but it fits Luz so well. She's had to find the courage in herself so often, not only to trust herself, but to trust in the people and the friendships she's made. Luz has had to come so far, and this song just fits. (And if you haven't watched the amazing AMV Missa made, watch it right now: here)
Lotor -- Everybody Wants To Rule The World (specifically the L.orde cover). I picked this song because everyone around him wants to figure out a way to rule the universe. He just wanted to explore, to learn, but he had to throw his hat into that ring, had to become a ruler in order to fight against his father's ruthlessness, to 'turn his back on mother nature.' Lotor fought everything he was raised to be to do good, and I'll be emotional about it forever.
Runaan -- Battlefield. His whole thing is fighting to protect the people he cares about, to make sure that those who can't fight don't have to. He sacrifices because it is what he knows. There is just something so heartbreaking about someone who knows that, every time he says goodbye to the people he leaves behind, it could be the last time. And he is willing to do that, because if his death will save them, he will gladly give himself. He doesn't want to die, but if that is what is required of him, he will give his all.
Will Solace -- Surface Pressure (specifically Caleb Hyles' cover version). Everyone expects Will to be strong, to be chill. He's the camp healer, he looks like he should be on a beach and surfing. And he tries so hard to be that for everyone, that it just keeps building. "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" is also just such a Will thing. So yeah, a look into my sunshine-y blonde boy who is under a lot of pressure that he doesn't show to basically anyone.
Kratos -- To Be Better. It's a G.oWR fansong, so it feels a little like cheating, but this is honestly one of the best ways to see Kratos, especially how I play him. He has a past, one that is fully of darkness and blood that he cannot escape from, but he can try to move beyond it, to be better.
Grog -- Born To Be a Killer. Similar to Kratos, this is a Grog fansong, but it's pretty much perfect. I love the vibe and the lyrics, because Grog was born and raised to be a killer, but he made his own choices and decided that that wasn't what he wanted. He decided that he was going to look out for the little guys, and while he still kills, he does so on his own terms and not because someone tells him he has to. I have said it before, and I'll keep saying it: Grog may have an intelligence of 6, but his heart is a Nat 20.

Mysterious beast wandering the boiling isle’s around dark, it howls at the moon and cries tears of golden light. Not much is known about this beast, but is often followed by a cloaked figure with a dragon palisman.
